Ieder soeverein land heeft zijn eigen wetten voor de regeling van de toekenning van octrooien. Het aanvragen van octrooibescherming in elk land ter wereld is heel zeldzaam en bovendien heel duur. Een octrooi wordt voornamelijk aangevraagd in landen waar een uitvinding ge\u00ebxploiteerd en gecommercialiseerd gaat worden. Ook in landen met fabrieken die behulpzaam kunnen zijn in een eventuele \u00a0inbreuk op de rechten van octrooihouders.
